Their digital version used to be websites you randomly stumbled across online which maybe didn’t necessarily change lives, but were new and sometime fun. These are matters that organizing knowledge and information has to grapple with, and they are extremely important matters because books one stumbles across in a library can and have changed lives. On the first page we have ‘positive psychology,’ which can best be described as superstitious claptrap and worse, dangerous nonsense.ĭoes Google care, or even Brave, that they’re choosing this on their very limited and super exclusive first page, over say a book on design principles that through beauty shows some sort of meaning of life, and choose to display that nonsense at presumably mostly teenagers at arguably their most vulnerable time. Why Stanford? On which page is the Gothic perspective, if it is there at all? Instagram’s tag of the meaningoflife is on the second page. They give just nine pages of results, and the first page looks almost identical to Google’s with the philosophy part brushed off into just one link to Stanford’s Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Not that Brave is much better on that front. Very few will find out that Google can barely give you 200 searches for an incredibly wide term that could go through Schopenhauer, maybe Plutarch, Hindu wisdom, Buddhist, maybe even some Cesars, not to mention modern philosophers with some blog somewhere. It is no wonder that some see it as misleading because in the first page you assume Google is this giant sophisticated search marvel that is processing billions of pages to give you all the world’s information at your finger tips.Īnd 99.9% of searchers will stay on that first page and with that impression. It turns out that in this case there’s actually just 213 results, with Google giving no option to see any further results out of their 8.7 billion. Misleading? Actual Google search results, Sep 2022 Google claims there’s about 8.7 billion results for this search term. This weekend, the fairly prominently displayed figure of 8 gazillion results came under criticism as being misleading. Yet the time is ripe for disruption, especially as hardly a day goes by without some article lamenting some element of the decline in Google’s search results.
